…Says Reported Kinsmen Opposition Against Irona Imaginary
The Peoples Democratic Party-PDP in Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State says it shall have an all-round defeat against the All Progressives Congress-APC and other opposition parties in the area in 2023.
PDP Chairman, Oguta Local Government Area, Hon. Fred Opiah stated this while responding to questions from newsmen in Owerri Thursday morning.
Reacting to a newspaper publication insinuating that some members of the All Progressives Congress in Oguta Local Government Area were still opposed to the PDP, in spite of having a Deputy Governor from the Local Government Area, Opiah described the report as baseless, saying those involved were expired politicians.
“I am aware of a meeting held at the Owerri residence of former Chairman of Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State, Dr. Gideon Nwaeze. From the attendance of the meeting to the quality of discussion, you can see that those were expired politicians. A new breed of visionary, political actors are dominating the space presently. I can assure you that in 2023 and beyond, we shall chew the APC and other opposition political parties in the state like Crackers Biscuits, because our performance will silence every opposition. People of the area have completely accepted the ruling party, the PDP and rejected the APC in all its forms and manifestation. They love their son, Gerald Irona and there is nothing anyone can do about it. The report is a figment of the writer’s imagination, as there is no opposition against Gerald Irona. We rather have imaginary opposition.”
Continuing, Opiah called on all those involved in what he described as an “unpopular and impossible mission” to retrace their steps before it is too late.
On efforts to consolidate the victory of the party in the area, Opiah explained that most political camps in the LGA are emptying into the ruling PDP, describing the Party’s Umbrella as large enough to accommodate all.
He however accused opposition in the area of plotting to instigate crises, assuring the people that the state government has capacity to entrench good governance in the state.
“We are aware of their plans to instigate crises in the oil producing Local Government Areas of the state. I pity them, because they will have themselves to blame, as the consequence of their action will be grave. People of the State have rejected the APC in all its manifestations. In Oguta Local Government Area, it has been reduced to a gathering of a few individuals, with no political value. I advise them to join the moving train- the PDP, before it is too late.”
He however called on people of the state to continue to keep faith with the Ihedioha/Irona administration, assuring them of good governance.
Similarly, Chairman, Peoples Democratic Party Campaign Council and Chief of Team Ihedioha campaign in Oguta LGA during the 2019 general elections, Hon. Sydney Uneanya described the report of opposition against the Deputy Governor, Engr. Gerald Irona as mischievous and lacking in substance.
Speaking in a telephone interview, Uneanya described the reported meeting of the APC as insignificant and posing no threat to the Rebuild Imo administration, describing the Rebuild Imo standard as novel and unprecedented.
“People must not all belong to one political party. People must meet under one umbrella or the other. So far, the groupings of opposition parties do not constitute any threat and will never, because the unprecedented performance of the present administration, coupled with its structure will not allow any opposition room to surface. It is natural for an administration to have opposition and we recognize this, but, considering the high performance of the Ihedioha/Irona administration, opposition in the state is crippled.”
He however advised opposition in the state to cue behind the present administration in order to contribute their quota towards the development of the state.
It would be recalled that an Owerri-based local tabloid, in a front page report entitled “Imo Dep. Gov. faces Strong opposition from kinsmen, as APC leaders Pledge Allegiance to Hope Uzodinma” claimed the Deputy Governor is facing strong opposition in his Local Government Area.
