The Athletic Federation of Nigeria (AFN) and the Cross River State Sports Commission have given their full support to the organisers of the first ever 10 kilometre Calabar International marathon race.
The chairman of Cross River State Sports Commission, Chief Orok Duke confirmed that he has received the proposal about the marathon race from the organisers but that a further meeting for extensive details will be released soon.
Chairman of the Brotherhood Youth Fellowship, organisers of the race, Archbishop Tom Inyang-Akpan disclosed that “Both institutions have given us their backing”. He said they decided to organise the race to commemorate their 42nd anniversary, which is to climax in Calabar.
He said the registration for the race was ongoing and that he was expecting big names in marathon race in Nigeria and other countries to feature in the inaugural race holding on 20 July 2019.
He said already they have received confirmation from several Nigerian youths in the South-South, Southeast and south western states including Abuja.
Inyang-Akpan said the race will begin from and terminate at the UJ Esuene stadium Calabar while top winners of the race will smile home with N1m each in the male and female categories.
