Even though Gov Ben Ayade of Cross River State has promised to place hundreds of widows in the state on salary, yet a determined women group in the state has consolidated efforts to enhance the living standard of widows in the state.
At their town hall meeting in Calabar on Thursday, spokeswoman of the group which membership has increased to 20, Mrs Cecilia Ofum said even though the women came together few months ago yet they have already extended material supports to some widows in Boki and other LGAs of Cross River State.
Mrs Ofem said they usually pull resources together and mostly collect food items such as vegetables, dawadawa etc in large quantities and donate to vulnerable women, particularly widows to sell for their own profits.
She said they were touched by the plight of increasing number of women in the state who are frequently challenged by marital, social and circumstantial situations.
Addressing the women, Coordinator of the Grassroots Women Journalists in the state, a veteran journalists herself, Mrs Florence Kekong said the purpose of the group which comprises of other women journalists and non professionals, said the group is opened to many women who share in the vision and objectives of the group.
Kekong said the group has taken up the plight of identified women in the state who are challenged economically and maritally in some mass media organs, which efforts have attracted concerns from many kindhearted individuals. This benefitted a handful of women, she disclosed.
She cited the case of a vegetable seller in the state whose plight was published by a newspaper attracted public supports which have helped to set her business up
