The annual Egungun festival that kick-started in Okeho, Kajola local government area of Oyo state on Friday, July 12, has turned into battle between the supporters of the two famous masquerade groups as three fear dead while scores sustained various degrees of injuries.

An eyewitness, Sulaiman Adebayo, said that the war broke out on Thursday, July 18, between the two different supporters of the two famous masquerades who claimed superiority over the other.

Adebayo said that Shologo was the name of a masquerade while King Caesar was the second one whose claims of superiority caused bloody and fierce battle between the duo and their supporters.

He noted that Shologo masquerade was on town tour on Thursday, July 18 while King Caesar masquerade met him at Imoba junction of the community.

Adebayo said Shologo compelled King Caesar to show respect to him as he claimed he was superior to Caesar.

The action was said to have annoyed and infuriated Caesar and his supporters to engage in a serious battle with the rival.

He described the battle as disheartening and pathetic as three feared dead and the scores sustained various degrees of injuries.

Adebayo lamented that the supporters of the two masquerades engaged one another in a serious battle with the use of guns, cutlasses, charms and other dangerous weapons to display strength and superiority.

He affirmed that no fewer than twenty supporters sustained various degrees of injuries as a result of fierce battle engaged by the two opposing sides.

Adebayo said that the policemen and other law enforcement agencies could not withstand the dangerous weapons that the supporters of the two masquerades displayed against one another.

The town’s monarch, Oba Abdul-Rafiu Osuolale Mustapha, was said to have earlier warned the owners of the two masquerades to refrain from an act capable of jeopardising the peace and tranquility in the town.

The efforts made to confirm the incident from the divisional police officer in the local government proved abortive as all mobile lines were switched off.
