NASS: Ihedioha Congratulates Senator Lawan, Hon. Gbajabiamila, Deputies

The Imo State Governor, Emeka Ihedioha has congratulated the leadership of the 9th National Assembly on the emergence of Senator Ahmed Lawan and Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila as President of the Senate and Speaker of the House of Representatives, respectively.
This was contained in an official press release made available by Chibuike Onyeukwu, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor.
The governor also congratulated their deputies, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege and Hon. Idris Wase.
While tasking the new leadership to endeavour to strengthen democracy in the country, Ihedioha also expressed worries at the situation of the six top political offices not having a representative from the Southeast geo-political zone.
In his words, “I congratulate the President of Senate, Sen. Ahmed Lawan, the Speaker of the House of Representatives and their deputies on their emergence.
“I urge them to ensure the strengthening of democracy in our country,” he stated.
While commending their transparent emergence, he said, “obviously, people voted their minds and they got overwhelming majority of votes.
“We expect them to work in consonance with the mandates they have been given.
“We expect them to ensure that the six geo-political zones in this country are given their rights of place and to run one house devoid of partisanship and division, and then strengthen the unity of our nation which today requires all of us to put hands on deck.
“So, we support and encourage the leadership of the National Assembly to their success.
“And interestingly I am a product of that Assembly and of a due process like this.
“So, I will give my loyalty and support to the leadership of the National Assembly”.
On the Southeast not featuring among the Presiding Officers, the former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives said, “It’s a democratic process.
“The officers emerged through a democratic process. I am not of the ruling All Progressives Congress.
“When our party was in control, we ensured fairness and equity in the distribution of positions.
“There is no way anybody from the Southeast will claim to be happy that nobody from the zone occupies any of the top six positions in the country.
“It didn’t happen in our time. And so these are posers for us to ponder.”
