The Assistant General Manager on Quality Health Safety and Environment (QHSE), Engr. Martins Agbetuyi and company lawyer of a Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) managers, Cakasa Nigeria Ltd, Barrister Onamson Okafor have declared that since they berthed in Calabar, capital of Cross River State, they have rather been earning laurels for complying strictly with global safety standards.
They have insisted that they have never had any industrial accidents.
“Since 2006 that we have been in Calabar, we have not recorded any fatality or Lost Time Injury (LTI) in our company; we are surprised to see such publication.
They used the opportunity to debunk some allegations by a Union called Iron and Steel Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ISSAN) which accused them of not complying with safety procedures.
The officials disclosed that they have strictly stuck to the industrial rules, for which they have received numerous important awards for safety compliance.
The lawyer also added that because of their stickler for standards, their workers have also kept to safety rules of the company and have been given awards for safety compliance.
“Soon we are going to have another elaborate safety award for all our staff that have worked in compliance to safety requirement and they will be given awards and certificates of recognition.
“We have never gone against any safety rule or practice.
“As a rule, before you embark on any work in any construction site, whether with my client or not, you must undergo what we call safety drill first.
“It is a must and before you go to any site activity for the day, we must make sure that you are properly kitted”, he said.
Agbetuyi, noted that they have been in existence for over 45 years and have been in Cross River for over 10 years and have never had any fatality in any of their operations.
They described the accusations by the union as baseless and one aimed at tarnishing their public image.
He added that they have been very good to their host communities and have also offered appointments to some members of the union.
According to him, the Chairman of the union, Mr. Cosmos Agbiji , who was alleged to be receiving over N450.000 as his monthly salary was one of the people that was employed by the company and was the same one that laid the accusation against the company.
“On the 3rd of April 2019, ISSAN published a report in some newspapers that Cakasa does not comply with safety procedure on site.
“One of the allegations is that the company failed to provide personal protective equipment to their men on site and that the men work under unsafe conditions.”
He said since they now have a new leadership they want us to renegotiate relationship, which possibly could be the reason they embarked on the defamation mission.
“We have never gone against any safety rule or practice.
“As a rule, before you embark on any work in any construction site, whether with my client or not, you must undergo what we call safety drill first.
“It is must and before you go to any site activity for the day, we must make sure that you are properly kitted”, he said.
Agbetuyi added that, ‘apart from that, Dangote just celebrated 2million Man LGI frame and cakasa was in the forefront of that and we have certificate on that.
“Then recently, on NDPR in port Harcourt, we were given man hour LGL free so I don’t know where this allegation is coming from, like what our lawyer has said, it is clear defamation of character.
“First and foremost, before we start any project, there is something we call risk assessment that need to be carried out and see what are the hazards that is in that job.
“Not only that, we create awareness everyday as per the job operation we want to carry out that day and during our risk assessment, we required that PPE be used for that job and will be identified and we don’t just issue, we issue with objective evidence which is what we have here.
“We have the goggles to protect your eyes, we have filters hand gloves face shift, welding mask and the rest.
“These are the things that are normally issued to people in the kind of environment that we work and as such these things have been properly done and the allegations leveled against Cakasa is not true and the same person in quote, even when he was engaged, look at his picture when he came in, I can show you evidence of all these PPE that he took in the cause of working.
“This weekend, we are going to have another elaborate safety award for all the people that have actually worked in compliance to safety requirement and they will be given award and certificate of recognition so I don’t know where that allegation is coming from”, he lamented.
